QR in the Library

QR codes tie the physical with the digital. This ability makes them a valuable tool for any education environment - libraries in particular.

With ever-expanding digital resources, libraries are trying to increase awareness of these new collections and services while making sure old formats are not being left behind. When successful this provides the greatest range of accessibility to the patron. Realizing this model though can be a challenge. This is where QR comes into the picture.

Picture this scenario of QR in the library:

A patron has a particular research subject - say, psychoanalysis - for which they require research assistance. Instead of going to the research desk, they could rent a mobile device from the Circulation Desk and go to the physical location of the print material. Once there, they could scan a QR code tied to the LC classification subject. Within seconds they have access to the local catalog, databases, and staff-developed information pages.

Here are some other things QR do in the library:

  • Provide directions to a collection or a department
  • Play tutorial videos
  • Offer support contact information
  • Send patrons to surveys
  • Complement promotional material
