Library 101 for SCE Students

Off Campus Access

Almost all of the library resources available to you as a PC student are accessible from off campus!

Anytime you try to use something that requires you to be a PC student from anywhere outside the campus, you'll be asked to sign in. To do so, you'll need to enter your PC email address (for example, yourname@friars.providence.edu) and your Canvas password when you see the Microsoft sign-in page. If you have trouble signing in, you can reset your password or reach out to iHelp for assistance.

Once you're signed in, all of our electronic resources should work exactly as they would from on campus. If you run into any problems accessing anything, or you'd like assistance figuring out what resources would be best to use for your research, don't hesitate to reach out to a PC librarian via the contact info on the left side of this page.

Get a PC Card!

Many SCE students never set foot inside Phillips Memorial Library while they're completing their degrees. If you're planning to spend time on campus while you're in school, though, then you'll probably want to get your PC Card!

A PC Card serves many purposes. First and foremost, it's your college ID, so it's all the proof you'll ever need that you're a student here at PC. Once you've obtained one, you can use it to access certain parts of the campus like the Concannon Fitness Center that are card-swipe restricted. You can also load money onto it and use it to make food and other purchases on campus and at select off-campus businesses. Most importantly to us here at the Library, your PC Card serves as your library card, allowing you to check out any books or other technology you may want to borrow.

PC Cards are completely free for students - all it requires is a photo. So if you'll be on campus regularly during your time as an SCE student, be sure to reach out to the PC Card Office about getting yours!

Library Technology

Campus Wi-Fi Access

Wireless internet access is provided on campus via the PC-Secure wireless network. Because this service is limited to students, faculty and staff, you will need to sign in with your Net ID and password in order to connect to the network.

Printing

PC uses the PC Prints system to provide printing self-service to students. Printers are available in the Library, and at numerous other locations across campus. There is a per-page charge for printing that varies depending on the nature of the printing job. SCE students must either add money to their PC Card or purchase a Visitor Card in order to claim their prints.

Computer Access

There are public computers available for student use on a first-come, first-served basis on the Library's first and second floors. You will be asked to log in using your Net ID and password before you can begin using any of these computers. There is no time limit on how long they can be used, and they are not able to be reserved in advance.

Loanable Technology

The Library maintains a collection of technology items that students are able to borrow. Among other things, this collection includes both PC and Apple laptops, iPads, digital photo and video cameras, storage media, and charger cables. Students will need to present their PC Card at the main desk when borrowing any library materials. First-time borrowers will be asked to sign the Library's Technology Borrowing Agreement before they can check any items out.

Software

Students are able to obtain free licenses for several software packages, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, and others, while they're enrolled at PC. Visit iHelp's website for a list of available software and instructions on how to install them.

Technology Help

Technology support for the PC community is provided by iHelp. In addition to providing technology tutorials and training, iHelp maintains the IT Helpdesk, which provides PC students with assistance on technology issues. The IT Helpdesk accepts walk-ins in room LL25 of the Library, and can also be reached via email at helpdesk@providence.edu or by phone at 401 865 HELP (4357).
