The Bible

This is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English. In 1749, the original Douay-Rheims Bible was revised by Richard Challoner, an English Catholic bishop. His revision was published in 1752. Challoner revised the text according to the Clementine edition of the Vulgate (published by Pope Clement VIII in 1592) and the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. There were also alterations made in spelling, vocabulary, and sentence structure to make it more readable. FULL-TEXT ONLINE

This is an English translation of the Bible published in 1966 that was heavily influenced bu the 1956 French Bible de Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Bible is the basis of the lectionary for mass used in Catholic worship throughout England, Wales, and most of the English-speaking world outside the United States and Canada. This update of the 1966 Jerusalem Bible is based more substantially on the original Greek and Hebrew texts than any French translation. It contains a limited amount of inclusive language. It was edited by Henry Wansbrough, a major British biblical scholar and an important figure in the Benedictine Community. This Revised New American Bible (RNAB) represents the work of nearly 100 scholars, including translators, editors, and a subcommittee of Catholic bishops over a period of many years. Differences between the 1991 3rd edition and earlier editions include the first update of the Old Testament since 1970 (considering archaeological and textual discoveries) and a complete revision of the Psalter.

The Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE) is a Catholic adaptation of the Revised Standard Version, which is itself an adaptation of the King James Bible. It was originally published in 1966, and a revised version came out in 2006.

The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) is an English-language Catholic Bible translation. This is the most recent update of the New American Bible (NAB), originally published in 1970 by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. It consists of the 1986 revision of the NAB New Testament along with a fully revised Old Testament approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2010. This Bible has been approved for private use and study by Catholics. However, the NABRE has not received approval for Catholic liturgical use. The NABRE New Testament is currently being revised so that American Catholics can read the same Bible translation in personal study and devotion that they hear in Mass. FULL-TEXT ONLINE

This Bible is one of the most historically significant translations, preceding the King James Version by 51 years. This was the primary Bible of 16th century English Protestantism. William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Know, John Donne, and John Bunyan were among those who used this version of the Bible. The ASV was completed in 1901, with the publication of the Old Testament. It’s New Testament had previously been released in 1900. It has been known by a variety of names, such as the American Revised Version, the American Standard Revision, the American Standard Revised Bible, and the American Standard Edition. By the time its copyright was renewed in 1929, it had come to be known by its present name, the American Standard Version. The New King James Version is a conservative revision of the King James Version that adheres to the sources used in the original King James Version. For the New Testament, this means that the Greek text followed is the Textus Receptus of the early printed editions of the sixteenth century. The NRSV is an English translation of the Bible published in 1989 by National Council of Churches. It is a revision of the Revised Standard Version, which was an update of the American Standard Version. The NRSV was written to serve devotional, liturgical and scholarly needs of the broadest possible range of religious adherents. The full translation includes the books of the standard Protestant canon as well as the Deuterocanonical books, traditionally included in the canons of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
